If you live in Berlin or Potsdam and are in the market for a Christmas tree (Weihnachtsbaum), then I highly recommend visiting Werderaner Tannenhof Farm in Werder, near Potsdam. We almost just went to the garden shop down the road from us for a tree, as we did last year (easier with kids!), but we knew this trip would render better memories. I have to say that I am SO very glad we made the short trip. It was absolutely beautiful and the kids had a magical time!
Upon arrival, you are given a wheelbarrow and a saw for your tree at no cost. Next, you look at the map of the farm to decide which type of tree you’d like and set out in that direction on the path. Along the way there are plenty of benches and little stands serving mulled wine (glühwein) and other warm beverages. Once you find the perfect tree for you, you saw it down, hoist it onto your cart and make your way back. There is a netting station on your way to the check out, as well a snack bar, a quaint gift shop, and a farm goods shop. It really is quite lovely and very well presented! I would say to expect to spend a minimum of two hours start to finish just getting your tree. It will be longer if you are planning to linger and shop.
I wish I would have taken more pictures, but I was wearing a baby and pushing a stroller with a sleeping toddler in it! Hopefully these give you an idea of what to expect on the farm.
