Happy Throwback Thursday! Today I’m throwing back to two years ago, when I tried to throw a birthday party while traveling! We were on short term orders to D.C. and had JUST moved there from England. A few of my closest girlfriends I grew up taking ballet lessons with had daughters the same age as mine and we were determined to get them together before our family moved back overseas. So, we took a two day trip to my hometown of Virginia Beach, rented a flat on the strip, and threw a mermaid party at the beach!
In my head, it was going to be fun and easy. In reality, it was kind of exhausting and nothing went as planned! The buttercream on the cake I made in D.C. almost completely melted on the drive down, due to the sweltering Virginia heat and the car ride that should have taken three and a half hours, but actually took nine because of the traffic! We got in at almost 11:00 PM and were hosting the party the next day at our rental property, so we were scrambling and editing plans all the way to the last minute. In the end, we had an awesome time and our daughter says it was the best birthday party we’ve thrown yet!
I had sewn the mermaid tails in England and shipped them to myself in advance. I chose swimsuit material for the tail and a delicate crêpe chiffon for the fins. I loved the variety of colors and asked my friends their daughter’s color preference and size and it worked out perfectly. We even had a couple baby mermaids, who were just ridiculously adorable! The swimsuit material worked out great, because I actually let my girls play in the bathtub in theirs. SO fun! I used THIS tutorial as a guide and kind of off-roaded a bit. I love Pinterest, don’t you?!
We set up a little station for kids to bedazzle their own little treasure chests. I wish I had more pictures of that, but there was just too much going on! Lesson learned: If you think you might want to share the party later on, take photos of your setup beforehand. Once those kids coming running in, it’s over for your photo dreams! Also, I’ve learned to set a parent on activities that are best with supervision.
I had all sorts of great plans for festive food, but when we arrived so very late the night before our plans got edited and we ended up just putting out fresh fruit and veggies and ordering freshly made pizzas from Whole Foods. It worked out great and everyone was happy! My cake pops and the birthday cake survived and were revived in the fridge overnight.
The best part, of course, was walking down to play on the beach with our friends at the end of the day. The best of our memories have been made at the beach!
